We were honoured to have distinguished science photographer, Felice Frankel present on her award winning work. Felice is a research scientist at the Center for Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where in collaboration with many scientists and engineers her works have appeared in over 200 publications. During her career she has won numerous awards, such as the Lennart Nilsson Award for Scientific Photography, and has been profiled in the New York Time, Washington Post and LIFE magazine, to name a few.
The Chemistry in Society Lectureship occured March 7 and 8th, 2016 with two presentations and one workshop. All events were free to attend and light refreshments were provided. Information about each event is provided below, with more details on the attached posters. For more information asbout Felice and her work please visit her website, felicefrankel.com, and follow her on twitter@felicefrankel. 1. Academic Talk: “More Than Good Enough: Making Images and Graphics in Science and Engineering”3:30 pm on Monday, March 7th, 2016 at IRMACS, Simon Fraser University (Burnaby) Felice demonstrated how taking the process of creating visuals just one step further, can help with journal submissions, presentations, posters and submissions to funding agencies. She showed various step by step processes for getting from "here" to "there" (details). 2. General Talk: “More Than Pretty Pictures”7:00 pm, Tuesday March 8th, 2016 at D. M. World Art Centre, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, Simon Fraser University (Vancouver), 149 West Hastings Street> Felice presented successes and failures during 20+ years of creating images in science and engineering. She demonstrated that a well thought out visual image of a complicated ideas in research can clarify the science for both the researcher AND the viewer (details). 3. Workshop: “Effective Visual Design Workshop”1:00-4:00 pm, Tuesday, March 8th, 2016, SSB 7172, Simon Fraser University (Burnaby) This workshop was intended for post-docs and graduate students. It showed participates how to develop images that effectively represent their research. The UBC Undergraduate Chemistry Society (UCS) is proud to host one of its biggest annual activities Chemistry Forum 2016. This student-organized event features up to eight professional speakers from industry and academic settings, who will talk about how a baccalaureate in chemistry helped shape their current career path. Students are able to converse with our guest speakers on a personal level and receive valuable career tips, along with building their professional network. A catered lunch will be provided for registered attendees. Dress code is business casual. Interested individuals are invited to check our website for more details: ucs.chem.ubc.ca/2016/02/18/forum2016/
The theme of this graduate student-organized event, held at UBC Vancouver Campus, 2360 East Mall, was Energy Solutions for a Sustainable Future. It featured guest speakers Dr. Sylvian Coulombe (McGill University), Dr. Chris Wilmer (University of Pittsburgh) and Dr. Axel Meisen (FCAE), as well as an Industry Discussion Panel, Bridging Academia and Industry with a Focus on Entrepreneurship. Registration for this event was free. Undergraduate and graduate students had the opportunity to compete in the Undergraduate Design Teams Competition, as well as the Scientific Poster and 3-Minute Thesis Competitions.
Engineering Research Days provide the ideal opportunity for all students and professionals in Vancouver to learn about their field, expand their professional networks and present their work. For more information about this or future events please visit the Engineering Research Day website or Facebook page, or email the organizing team. ![]() SFU's Undergraduate Chemistry Student Society held a Chemistry Career Night at the Diamond Alumni Centre, SFU. This was a speed-mentoring event designed for one-on-one interaction with industry professionals. Speakers included employers from Switch Materials Inc, Ballard Power Systems, BC Research, Phyton Biotech, and Xenon Pharmaceuticals, plus a representative of SFU Graduate Studies. It provided a great opportunity to help SFU students consider many of the careers they can pursue with their SFU Chemistry degree. ![]() This evening the Vancouver section of the Chemical Institute of Canada, in partnership with NSERC - Pacific, hosted the BC Academia - Industry Mixer III. This event took place at SFU Vancouver’s Harbour Centre Campus. The goal of this event was to forge new collaborations and research opportunities as well as celebrating ongoing partnerships between industry representatives and academic researchers. Member of the chemistry community were invited and encouraged to attend. The evening included a presentation from Dr. Elicia Maine, Associate Professor in Technology and Operations Management at the Beedie School of Business, and the Academic Director of the Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology Commercialization. Dr. Maine spoke on “Turning Invention into Innovation: Chemists as Scientist-Entrepreneurs”. In addition, representatives from NSERC (Dr. Pam Giberson) and Mitacs (Dr. Laurence Meadows) gave a brief insight on these types of partnerships from a funding agency standpoint. A networking mixer with food and light refreshments followed the presentations. It is hoped that this informal meeting will lead to new and exciting collaborations. Every year the national office run the National Crystal Growing Competition (see link for details). At the local level we organize teachers/students to take part in the event, collect the crystals from our section and judge them. We try to do the judging in a public space so the student and the public can come, watch, and learn more about growing crystals. This year our judging event was at The Crystalworks Gallery (crystalworks.ca), on Nov. 28th. We would like to thank the Crystalworks Gallery for the use of their venue as well as their sponsorship of the prizes for our top crystal growers. The winning crystals were sent on to compete in the National Crystal Growing Competition (results).
This year's annual CIC dinner meeting and awards night was held at the SFU Diamond Alumni Centre (SFU Burnaby Campus) on Nov. 12th. Congratulations to all our Student Awards winners and thank-you to all who came! This was a lovely dinner with friends and a talk by an engaging guest speaker! This year we were fortunate to have Mr. Kevin Meisner, from Britannia Mine Museum (britanniaminemuseum.ca), who discussed the history of the mine, the chemistry that occurred there and the efforts to clean up the mine site.
